  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Hypnotherapy?
A form of therapy involving both Client and Therapist that allows you to make positive changes in your life by using the power of the subconscious mind.

What is Hypnosis or Trance?
Hypnosis or trance is when the conscious mind is completely focused on just one thing. In a therapy setting this would normally be the Therapist’s voice. This allows the subconscious mind (the root of all memories and emotions) to be addressed directly.

Is it dangerous?
Absolutely not. We all enter a light state of Hypnosis from time to time. Sometimes this will be when drifting off to sleep where the mind begins to wander. Daydreaming is often a similar, trance like state.

Will I lose control?
Hypnosis will enable you to enter into a deep state of relaxation and comfort in which you will become even more aware of your self and what you are doing. You will always remain in control.

What if I don't come out of hypnosis?
This is just not possible - remember control stays totally with you. You will simply return to your normal awake state feeling refreshed and with a great sense of achievement.

Will I reveal private issues during hypnosis?
Hypnotherapy is all about the Client regaining control in their life. It is not possible to force anyone in hypnosis to act against his or her will. You will only reveal that which you wish to. As a member of the Hypnotherapy Society, I am bound by the code of ethics which assures the Client of complete confidentiality.

Will I be forced to do things against my will?
No! Your subconscious mind will always be looking after your best interests. If a suggestion was made that was not in your interest it would be rejected and you would very likely come out of hypnosis.

Will I be asleep?
No, you will be very aware of what is happening although clients are often very relaxed. One helpful definition of hypnosis is “complete concentration on a single thought”. During a session, you could at any time open your eyes if you wanted to. However, clients often report feeling very relaxed at the end of a session.

How long does it take?
A typical session lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour, a quit smoking session may last 1 to1 & 1/2 hours. (Quit smoking is normally a two session program). Most Clients will have between three and ten sessions depending on their needs, but frequently, positive results are felt even after the first session.

What makes Hypnotherapy different?
Hypnosis allows you to access your subconscious mind; the root of emotions and behaviours. Normally the subconscious is inaccessible and this helps to explain why it can be so hard to change an unwanted habit or behaviour, even when consciously trying to achieve a goal (giving up cigarettes for example). Other “talking therapies” are carried out at a conscious level that can sometimes make it much more difficult to achieve a desired change.

What can Hypnotherapy help with?
Smoking | Weight Control | Self Confidence | Fears & Phobias | Blushing | Panic Attacks
Driving Exam Nerves | Stress Management | Nail Biting | Anxiety About Driving | Dentist Fear
Goal Achievement | Social Phobias and many other things besides!

I'm already taking Prozac, can Hypnotherapy help me?
You may have been prescribed Prozac or a similar anti-depressant medication to help you deal with the effects of your current circumstances. Often these medications can provide some 'breathing space' as you re-assess your life or the situation in which you find yourself. Hypnotherapy can provide a valuable tool for resolving the underlying issues that led to feelings of anxiety, despair or depression. In these circumstances we would work together only with the written permission of your Doctor or GP. Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical care but a powerful and valuable complement to it.

What do the Medical professions say?
Hypnotherapy is now widely recognised and accepted by the medical professions who understand that the mind and body are closely linked. Many (but sadly not all) GPs actively support the use of Hypnotherapy to achieve change.

Hypnotherapy works on the subconscious level of mind and conditions that have a psychosomatic element can often be quickly and easily dealt with.

The BMA acknowledged the usefulness of Hypnosis for pain control, insomnia and other conditions in a report written as long ago as 1892. Hypnotherapy was recognised as a valid therapeutic treatment by the British Medical Association in 1955.

My church forbids the use of hypnosis and says it opens you to evil
This view can really only come from the perspective of not knowing what hypnosis is about. When you recall that we enter hypnotic states all the time, especially when watching films or television, this idea that hypnosis can be some portal to an evil realm seems far fetched. Whether you have a faith or not, hypnosis can be a useful tool for you.

What is EFT?

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is based on a new discovery that has provided thousands with relief from pain, diseases and emotional issues. Simply stated, it is an emotional version of acupuncture except needles aren't necessary. Instead, you stimulate well established energy meridian points on your body by tapping on them with your fingertips. The process is easy to memorize and is portable so you can do it anywhere. It launches off the EFT Discovery Statement which says...

"The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system."

And because our physical pains and diseases are so obviously connected with our emotions the following statement has also proven to be true...

"Our unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical pains and diseases."

If you would like to find out more about EFT, I suggest you visit the Emotional Freedom Technique web at http://www.emofree.com. It has an enormous amount of information to discover and read.
